about
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797–1798 and published in 1798.
Using random generative music software with text to speech (WOTJA), I worked with the text, and selected instrumentation and pacing from the variety of options, and many, many possibilities.
The text to speech function is, of course, imperfect with its interpretation of 18th Century English. For each part of the poem I attempted to alter to mood, or tone of the instrumentation options.
I hope you enjoy this interpretation of my favorite, and most incredible poem.
lyrics
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (excerpt from Part I)
It is an ancient Mariner,
And he stoppeth one of three.
'By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,
Now wherefore stopp'st thou me?
The Bridegroom's doors are opened wide,
And I am next of kin;
The guests are met, the feast is set:
May'st hear the merry din.'
He holds him with his skinny hand,
'There was a ship,' quoth he.
'Hold off! unhand me, grey-beard loon!'
Eftsoons his hand dropt he.
